convex vinyl for helmet decals

Convex® GearWrap™ Vinyl for Helmet Decals

With GearWrap Adhesive for Helmets
  • Convex is a unique, thick vinyl that conforms to complex curves.
  • GearWrap Adhesive is specifically engineered to stick to painted polycarbonate (helmets) and high energy surfaces.
  • Mix and match with Convex laminates to suit a variety of applications.

Convex GearWrap’s adhesive is designed for high-energy surfaces such as helmets.  It is cleanly removable for up to one year, which makes replacing decals easier.  The adhesive is initially re-positionable and is ideal for enamel-painted polycarbonate shells (as well as glass, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, vinyl, and ABS plastics).

Overview

Vinyl for helmet decals

Convex® is a very pliable vinyl that adheres to helmets and other complex curves without wrinkling or buckling. The thicker the construction, the easier it is to apply. GearWrap™ adhesive is specially formulated to stay put, yet remove cleanly without residue for up to a year after it is applied.  This cuts down on the labor that is involved in refurbishing helmets and replacing decals. Convex Laminates are formulated with the right amount of adhesive (ensuring that your decals have minimal shrinking and last for a long time).

decal-apply-close-upWhen Convex GearWrap is applied to a helmet and rubbed from the center out, you should be able to rub out the “air tunnels” (squeezing or condensing the vinyl). With that said, everything has its limits. A strategic cut into an oversized design may help with the application. GearWrap vinyl is available for thermal printers in 4 and 8 mil clear (or white). For wide-format inkjets, GearWrap is available in 4 or 8 mil white.

Specifications

General Description: Clear and white, soft flexible vinyl with a clear permanent acrylic adhesive. Convex-based materials are intended to be used for thermal resin transfer, solvent inkjet printing, and/or over-laminating.

Different combinations of Convex GearWrap™ and laminates can be used to achieve a variety of decal thicknesses. Please see the disclaimer at the bottom.

Thickness 3 or 8 mil vinyl with 1 mil of adhesive
Outdoor Life 2 years – Convex GearWrap
Shelf Life 2 years when stored at 70º F & 50% RH
Adhesive Properties Specially formulated, permanent, acrylic, pressure-sensitive adhesive works on most surfaces.  Cleanly removable for up to a year on helmets.  Not recommended for low-energy plastics.
Service Temp. Range -40º F to 176º F
Minimum Application Temp. 50º F

Recommended Application Techniques: On curved surfaces (such as helmets), apply by rubbing from the center out.

When using a laminator: when Convex laminate is separated from the liner, it is unsupported and can stretch during the laminating process if there is too much reverse-tension applied to the supply roll. Stretching will result in your decals curling up immediately after they are cut. Laminate with a cold, pressure-sensitive laminator (or by hand).

Software Settings: although we do not offer specific profiles for inkjet printers, we have found that most RIPS offer generic white vinyl profiles that require minimal adjustments to get excellent results. You should determine what is acceptable for the desired application.

Software Settings: In Gerber’s Plot program, click on the “123” button. You then click on the substitute button and select vinyl type “Convex GearWrap,” or ImageCal R from the pull-down menu. The default Scotchcal 220 settings may also work. The default plotter settings for “Convex GearWrap” will work for the 4 mil Convex. 8 mil Convex uses the same print settings. If you have a Gerber enVision™ 375 plotter, you can use a 45º blade to cut Convex. A 60º blade is recommended for combinations that result in a finished thickness that is over 8 mil. We use 45° blades to cut all of our samples. In Gerber’s Plot program, go to plotter setting “F7” and perform test-cuts in order to determine the right settings for the material and laminate combination.

Recommended Overlaminates

ConvexLaminate_145x77

Convex Laminate: Use Convex Laminates on top of GearWrap base vinyl when you need impact protection and also need to apply graphics to complex curves.  Available in 4, 8, 10, and new 20 mil.

convex_uv

For longer UV protection, check out Convex Supreme UV 5-7 year laminate with UV inhibitors.

Pro-Shield_300x156

Pro-Shield Laminates: Thick, durable laminates that are flexible (but not as conformable) as Convex laminates. Pro-Shield is more abrasion resistant than softer laminates and will conform with the aid of a heat gun. Available in 7, 12 and New 7 mil Matte. Pro-Shield is not recommended for helmets.

Stubbl_200x58

Stubbl is a very clear, heavily textured, 18 mil thick laminate that is designed to give you traction (or grip). It can be used on top of graphics or directly on a surface that needs more friction: great for boats, wind surfers, etc.
